the spirit of lapeyre

In days gone by, the wine from Jurancon was an anytime bar and bistrot wine! It was common to share a pitcher (a ½ litre carafe) from dusk 'til dawn!

"Le Béarnais" (a dialect of Occitan spoken in Béarn) is our mother tongue. The typical Béarnais expression of "ca-i bever un cop" (to share a drink) is symbolic of the region's welcoming nature. Just like singing, dancing and gastronomy, the wine of Jurancon encourages conviviality amongst friends.

Having vinified the wines "by the book" and particularly having gained a better understanding of our soils, the Mansengs etc…today, the wine is made in the best possible style. Our aim is to create expressive wines, representative of our terroir with its unique character. Each parcel of vines does not have the same potential, due to different soil composition, varying exposures, and the age of the vines…but each has an ability to give certain characters to the wine which are consistent year after year.

By vinifying these wines separately as much as possible, we are trying to make the "terroir" character more obvious. The blending of varieties is done during or after the ageing process to give:
- Two fruity-style wines: sec (dry) and moelleux (sweet)
- Two more serious cuvées: Vitatge Viehl (old vines) and La Magendìa de Lapeyre (Magendìa - cuvee previously known as "Selection")

With the aim of always respecting the original characters of these wines, fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts which multiply in the bottom of the tank: generally we never use cultivated commercial yeasts.

tasting :

Tasting our wine is pleasurable work, but crucial work nonetheless. It is essential to taste the wines regularly during the vinification period: the tasting determines the work that needs to be done (blending, decanting, stirring of the lees). Nothing takes place automatically - it all depends upon the wine itself.

The intervention of Benedicte Lebec, the oenologist from the Route des Vins de Jurancon, is also paramount: with the help of the Institut de Dégustation de Tours (the tasting institute of Tours), we have created analytical tasting sheets for Jurancon and Jurancon Sec to track our wines during the vinification process. We regularly organise winemaker meetings to taste our own wines blind and share advice and experience with others. Our greatest strengths lie within the union.
